Responsible Gambling Tools at Online Casinos

The casinos recommended on Best Casinolist are required to provide a specific set of responsible gambling tools as a condition of listing. A casino that does not offer all of these tools does not appear in our recommendations.

Deposit limits — Set a maximum amount you can deposit per day, week, or month. The limit takes effect immediately when lowered; increases typically have a cooling-off period of 24–72 hours to prevent impulsive decisions.

Session time limits — Set a maximum session length. A timer alert appears when you approach the limit. Some operators enforce a mandatory break when the limit is reached.

Loss limits — Set a maximum net loss per day, week, or month. This tool is separate from deposit limits and is particularly useful for players who regularly play through their deposits.

Reality check reminders — Pop-up alerts at set intervals (e.g., every 30 or 60 minutes) that display your session duration and net win/loss position.

Self-exclusion — Temporary (30 days to 12 months) or permanent exclusion from the casino. Once activated, the casino should cease all marketing communications immediately. Permanent self-exclusion is irreversible at the operator level.

How to access these tools: Log in to your player account, navigate to the responsible gambling or account settings section, and select the tool you want. If you cannot locate these settings, contact the casino's customer support directly — they are required to provide access.

Self-Exclusion in Canada

Self-exclusion options in Canada vary by province, and there is no single national program that covers all online casinos. However, several tools are available:

Provincial self-exclusion programs — Most provinces with land-based casinos (operated by provincial lottery corporations) have their own self-exclusion programs. These cover provincial properties and, in some provinces, extend to provincially licensed online platforms. They do not typically extend to offshore online casinos.

Operator self-exclusion — The most direct route for ROC players at offshore online casinos. Contact the casino directly or use the in-account self-exclusion tool. Request permanent exclusion if you want no possibility of return.

Gamban — gamban.com is a third-party software application that blocks gambling websites and apps across all devices. It covers thousands of gambling URLs and updates automatically. Gamban is device-level blocking — it is not reliant on an operator's cooperation. This is the most comprehensive technical barrier currently available to Canadian players who want to block online gambling access across all providers simultaneously.

How to request self-exclusion at an online casino:

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Navigate to "Responsible Gambling" or "Account Settings"
  3. Select "Self-Exclusion"
  4. Choose the duration (temporary: 30 days, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months; or permanent)
  5. Confirm. The exclusion takes effect immediately.
  6. The casino must close your account and return any remaining balance.

Self-exclusion is a voluntary tool. It is most effective when combined with device-level blocking (Gamban) and removal from marketing lists. Contact each casino's customer support to confirm you have been removed from promotional emails.

Problem Gambling — Signs and Support

The Responsible Gambling Council of Canada defines problem gambling as gambling that causes harm in a person's life — to their finances, relationships, mental health, or employment. Problem gambling exists on a spectrum; it does not require crisis-level harm to seek help.

Common signs that gambling may be becoming a problem:

  • Spending more money or time gambling than you planned
  • Trying to recover gambling losses by gambling more
  • Gambling when you feel stressed, anxious, or depressed
  • Hiding gambling activity from family or friends
  • Borrowing money to gamble or to pay gambling debts
  • Neglecting work, family, or social obligations due to gambling
  • Feeling unable to stop even when you want to

According to the Responsible Gambling Council, approximately 2–3% of Canadians experience some form of gambling-related harm. This is not a moral failing — gambling disorder is a recognised clinical condition with effective treatment options.

Getting help: Contact the organisations listed above. CAMH (camh.ca) provides referrals to problem gambling treatment centres across Canada. Gamblers Anonymous (gamblersanonymous.org/ga) offers peer support through a 12-step program adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous. Both are confidential.
