How We Review Online Casinos Canada — Our Process

Our Six-Point Review Framework

Every casino recommended on Best Casinolist must pass a six-point evaluation before it appears on any page. The framework applies equally to Microgaming-powered (MG-track) brands and to CRYPTO-track operators. No casino is reviewed differently because of its affiliate commission rate.

The six criteria, in order of weight: licensing and regulatory compliance; payout speed and withdrawal reliability; game library and software providers; payment methods available in Canada; mobile performance; and responsible gambling tools.

All six criteria must be assessed before a brand is considered for listing. Licensing is a threshold requirement — a casino that cannot demonstrate an active, verifiable licence from an accepted authority is not evaluated further, regardless of other factors.

This site covers Rest-of-Canada (ROC) players only. We do not list Ontario-licensed operators. Ontario has its own regulated framework under iGaming Ontario; we do not cover Ontario-licensed operators.

1. Licensing and Regulatory Compliance

Licensing is the first and non-negotiable filter. We accept licences from three issuing authorities:

Kahnawake Gaming Commission (KGC) — Based on Mohawk Territory in Quebec, the KGC has been issuing online gambling licences since 1999. Its licence register is publicly searchable at gamingcommission.ca. Several of the longest-standing Canadian casino brands — including MGA-licensed operators with Kahnawake Interactive Gaming Licences — fall under this jurisdiction.

Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) — A European Union regulatory body with rigorous player protection standards. MGA-licensed casinos are held to requirements around player fund segregation, game fairness audits, and responsible gambling tool provision. We verify MGA licence status at the MGA's public register.

Curaçao eGaming — The most common licence among crypto-friendly operators. Less prescriptive than MGA or KGC, but globally recognised and verifiable at curacao-egaming.com. CRYPTO-track brands on this site carry Curaçao licences from Direx N.V. (Bitstarz, Playamo, National Casino) or equivalent licensor entities.

How we verify: We check the licence status directly at the issuing registry — not from the casino's own "About" or footer text. For MGA and KGC, we look up the operator company name and licence number. We document this at the time of review.

Players sometimes ask about specific operators: "Is Jackpot City legit?" or "Is Grand Mondial Casino legitimate in Canada?" Both Jackpot City and Grand Mondial are Kahnawake and/or MGA-licensed. Verifying a casino's legitimacy starts with checking its licence at gamingcommission.ca — a step we take on behalf of every reviewed brand.

2. Payout Speed and Withdrawal Reliability

We test withdrawal reliability with real money. The process:

  1. Create a verified account (submit KYC documents where required)
  2. Make a real-money deposit using a Canadian payment method (Interac preferred for MG-track; Bitcoin for CRYPTO-track)
  3. Wager the deposit amount to clear any playthrough requirement
  4. Submit a withdrawal request
  5. Record elapsed time from "withdrawal requested" to "funds received in account or wallet"

We track two distinct timeframes: the casino's internal processing time (pending period) and the transit time through the payment network. These are often conflated in casino advertising. We separate them.

Benchmarks from our testing: Interac e-Transfer withdrawals at MG-track brands have cleared in 1–24 hours in most cases. Bitcoin withdrawals at CRYPTO-track brands depend on network congestion but typically confirm within 10–60 minutes once the casino processes the request. Bank wire transfers are the slowest method — typically 3–5 business days.

3. Game Library and Software Providers

We evaluate game libraries on three dimensions: depth (total title count), quality (software provider reputation), and variety (slot vs. live dealer vs. table game balance).

Minimum threshold: 300 real-money games available to Canadian players.

Preferred software providers: Microgaming / Games Global (the backbone of MG-track brands — provider of Mega Moolah, Thunderstruck II, and the major progressive jackpot network), Evolution Gaming (live dealer studio provider at most recommended casinos), Pragmatic Play, and NetEnt among others.

We check that the game library includes: a functioning live dealer lobby (roulette, blackjack, baccarat minimum), a substantial slot catalogue, and at minimum one progressive jackpot title. Crypto-track brands additionally receive credit for provably fair game availability.

4. Payment Methods Available in Canada

Canadian players should be able to deposit and withdraw in CAD without incurring excessive currency conversion fees. We check for:

Interac e-Transfer — Canada's standard bank-to-bank payment method. Available at all MG-track brands we recommend. We test deposit and withdrawal flows personally.

iDebit — A bank-linked intermediary service. Available at select MG-track brands.

Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), USDT — Assessed for CRYPTO-track brands. We verify minimum and maximum deposit amounts and note any wallet-address generation issues.

MuchBetter and Jeton — E-wallets popular at Curaçao-licensed platforms. Deposit and withdrawal availability both checked.

Paysafecard — Prepaid voucher; deposit-only (no withdrawals via Paysafecard). Availability confirmed where listed.

Casinos that only accept Visa/Mastercard without a Canadian-friendly alternative receive a lower payment method score. Credit card gambling restrictions implemented by major Canadian banks in 2019–2022 make bank card reliance a practical problem for many Canadian players.

5. Mobile Performance

All recommended casinos are tested on mobile devices. Our assessment covers:

  • Browser-based play on iOS (Safari) and Android (Chrome): does the site load, render correctly, and remain functional in portrait and landscape orientation?
  • Live dealer lobby on mobile: can you join a live blackjack or roulette table without performance degradation?
  • Mobile-specific app availability (where applicable): installation tested and functionality verified.

Casinos that require Flash or have loading issues on modern mobile browsers are noted and penalised in scoring.

6. Responsible Gambling Tools

This is a pass/fail criterion. A casino without all required responsible gambling tools is not listed.

Required tools:

  • Session time limits
  • Reality check reminders
  • Self-exclusion (temporary and permanent options)
  • Clear links to Canadian gambling support organisations

We test whether these tools are accessible from the player account dashboard without requiring contact with customer support. Tools that are buried or require a support ticket to activate fail this criterion.

Casinos are rated on a 1–10 editorial scale, expressed to two decimal places (e.g., 8.40). The six criteria above each contribute to the overall score, weighted by importance. The score reflects our editorial assessment only — it is not an aggregated user review score and does not appear as AggregateRating in schema markup. User review counts are not fabricated; the rating displayed on each casino page is Claire Bennett's editorial score.

Scores update when we re-test a casino (typically annually or when material changes are reported).

Conflict of Interest Policy

This site earns affiliate commissions when players it refers make deposits at partner casinos. That financial relationship is disclosed on every money page and explained in full on our editorial team.

The conflict of interest policy is simple: our rating score is set before we enter affiliate negotiations. If a casino rates 6.5, it rates 6.5 whether or not we have an active affiliate relationship with it. Casinos that fail our criteria — particularly on licensing, payout reliability, or responsible gambling — are not listed, regardless of what commission they offer.
